Technical Theatre Instructor

Project Sparx, the Educational Program for the Firehouse Center for the Arts seeks an enthusiastic, qualified, and experienced technical theatre instructor for our Behind the Scenes Program - an afterschool tech program held in conjunction with our after school productions. Ages vary from elementary to high school.

Key Tasks:

  • To direct groups of children in a fun and engaging manner.

  • Plan, develop, and facilitate technical theatre classes for students enrolled in our Behind the Scenes program during our after-school productions

  • Design and oversee the creation of student driven production elements including costume pieces, set pieces, props, lighting design and sound

  • Teach basic equipment operation to students - spotlights, light board, sound cues (off of computer), backstage crew, stage management (calling the show)

  • Manage the shop space including set up/take down before and after class of all supplies and equipment

  • Support, schedule and provide the technical support needed for each production

  • Be present and assist with load-in and strike for each production

  • Attend all Behind the Scenes classes, technical rehearsals and performances

  • Maintain a safe working environment at all times

  • Other duties as assigned

Key Requirements:

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Industry experience in all aspects of the performing arts

  • Experience designing, building and serving as crew on various productions

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

  • Knowledge of theatrical scenery and props, lighting and sound systems, and safe rigging and staging equipment

  • Must be able to pass a background check and fingerprinting.

  • High School diploma required; B.A. preferred

  • Experience working on multiple deadline driven projects simultaneously 


The ideal candidate will have teaching experience and/or will have worked in the field of education. This candidate will serve as The Technical Instructor for our Behind the Scenes After School programs, including courses at Molin Elementary School and our in-house Project Sparx Junior and Teen Ensemble programs. Candidate must be available on Mondays and Tuesdays after school between the hours of 2:30pm - 7:30pm and for occasional weekend rehearsals and performances.
