Project Sparx, the Educational Program at the Firehouse Center for the Arts

Our Outreach Programs

In partnership with local educational organizations including public elementary and middle schools, independent preschools, and community support organizations,  the Project Sparx Outreach Programs strives to bring performing arts education into classrooms across the Greater Newburyport area, as well as into additional underserved communities within Essex County.

Our classes will use a wide range of drama activities to encourage the development of acting and public speaking skills, creative thinking and leadership skills, self esteem, self confidence and social skills. Our programs offer both club and performance base opportunities including after school drama programs and "show in a box" productions.  Each program is uniquely developed to address the needs and resources of each community we serve.

Goals:

  • To create social and emotional awareness within our students

  • To help students develop empathy and to understand their own feelings, as well as the feelings of others

  • To develop creativity and spontaneity through the exploration of theatre

  • To develop critical-thinking and problem-solving skills through acting exercises

  • To develop communication skills through group exercises and teamwork

  • To learn and use the essential vocabulary and processes of theatre

  • To learn the importance of cooperation through collaboration

Class Objectives:

  • Express multiple characters through the use of body and voice

  • Develop vocal expression and literacy through storytelling

  • Collaborate with other students to create theatrical skits

  • Use improvisation to creatively solve problems

  • Enhance literacy by writing skits in groups or pairs

  • Develop physical awareness through movement and dance
